Catholics United National Ad Campaign Challenges Abortion Funding Claims

Posted March 18, 2010

Television Ads Will Run in 8 Congressional Districts through Health Care Vote

Beginning today, Catholics United will run television ads intended to set the record straight about false allegations of federal abortion funding in the Senate health care bill. The 30-second spots will remind undecided pro-life legislators and their constitutes that taxpayer funding of abortion is expressly prohibited in pending health care legislation, and that the bill has earned the support of a broad swath of the Catholic community.

Ads will air in saturation in the districts of Representatives Christopher Carney (PA-10), Kathy Dahlkemper (PA-03), Joe Donnelly (IN-02), Steve Driehaus (OH-01), Brad Ellsworth (IN-09), Daniel Lipinski (IL-03), Tom Perriello (VA-05), and Bart Stupak (MI-01).

The ads follow announcements that key pro-life Democrats, including Jim Oberstar (D-Minn.) and Dale Kildee (D-Mich.), will vote for final passage of the health care bill, and formal endorsements from the Catholic Health Association and leaders from some 50 Catholic women religious orders. A host of independent experts and news organizations have also affirmed the inaccuracy of allegations that health reform will force taxpayers to fund abortions.

“It is our sincere hope that pro-life Americans will see through the false charges and lend their support to this important legislation,” said Chris Korzen, executive director of Catholics United. “We are just days away from making history. It is absolutely essential that our leaders and their constituents are fully informed about how this bill will protect life and support our hard-working families.”

The ad also directs viewers to a fact check http://www.catholics-united.org/facts.

Ad script:

Some say health reform would force taxpayers to fund abortions.

It’s not true.

Analysts agree the reform bill prohibits federal funding for abortion.

It’s endorsed by pro-life advocates, like the Catholic Health Association and its six hundred hospitals.

And it defends human life at all stages, by covering thirty million uninsured and adding new protections for vulnerable pregnant women.
