Catholics United is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting the message of justice and the common good found at the heart of the Catholic Social Tradition. We accomplish this mission through online advocacy and educational activities.

History

We began our online advocacy in the spring of 2004, when a group of Catholic activists and friends formed the Catholic Voting Project to promote the U.S. Catholic Bishops' 2003 document Faithful Citizenship: A Catholic Call to Political Responsibility. The mission of CVP was to encourage a public dialog about faith and politics that went beyond the tired rhetoric of partisan interests by allowing Catholics to learn how their political views matched up to those of the U.S. Catholic Bishops and the two major presidential candidates.

Following our public launch in August of 2004, tens of thousands of Catholics from across the country visited the CVP Web site and took the Catholic Voting Project Quiz. Our work also attracted the attention of the Associated Press, Wired online, the Detroit Free Press, and many other local, national, and even international publications.

In 2005, the members of the Catholic Voting Project decided to incorporate formally as Catholics United. Catholics United is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization. Donations are not tax-deductible.

Staff

Chris Korzen - Executive Director
Chris served as co-founder and director of the Catholic Voting Project in 2004 and 2005, after working as a Web developer and as an organizer the Service Employees International Union. He is co-author of A Nation for All: How the Catholic Vision of the Common Good can Save America from the Politics of Division. Chris holds a Master of Theological Studies from Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, MA and is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, ME.

James Salt - Director of Organizing
James has extensive experience working national progressive Catholic peace and justice organizations as well as political campaigns involving Catholic strategy. He has worked for Pax Christi USA as a leader Pax Christi's Young Adult Forum, NETWORK, A National Catholic Social Justice Lobby, and was part of the launch team of Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good. Most recently, he held an organizing position Maryland Citizens Against State Executions, and oversaw the Kansas Democratic Party's faith outreach efforts, including messaging work for Governor Sebelius and development of faith-based messaging resources. James lives in Washington, DC.
